iOS 9 can temporarily delete apps to make room for software updates

An upcoming feature in iOS 9 should make it easier for users with limited storage space on their devices to install software updates.

When it launches this fall, iOS 9 should lay the groundwork to make it easier to install future software updates. The system will now ask you for permission to temporarily delete a select number of apps in order to free up enough space for an update. The apps will be restored once the update is complete.

This feature first noticed by Kaleb Butt on Twitter, who included the image below as well:

How exactly this deletion and restoration is accomplished is not yet known. It’s also unknown how system decides which apps to delete. It could be based on size, or even on who frequently or infrequently you use an app, prioritizing little-used apps for deletion first.

We’ll be sure to get a full look at temporary app deletion when iOS 9 releases to everyone this fall. For more on what you need to know about iOS 9, be sure to check out our FAQ.
