American Airlines flights that couldn’t take off due to problems with flight plans have since had the issue identified and fixed.
Jeppesen, who provides the custom app American Airlines uses to store and view the flight plans, pushed some bad bits that caused a temporary problem for pilots and crews. It affected less than 1% of flights, which is reportedly less than the average thunderstorm, but safety absolutely comes first. A remedy for the problem has already been provided, according to Jeppesen on Twitter:
@Jeppesen has provided a remedy for @AmericanAir pilots to address an isolated app issue that caused flight delays Tues. night

The story made headlines yesterday in part because the Jeppesen app runs on iPads and putting that or Apple on top of page draws a lot of attention. It’s sort of like focusing on a binder when the pages don’t get printed properly, but it is what it is.
Needless to say delays are frustrating for everyone and no doubt whatever issues caused the problem are already being addressed.
